Appeared in Library Journal on 2004-03-01:
Dale Chihuly has been one of the foremost masters of glass art for decades and is known internationally for his pushing of the envelope in glass design and for his installations set in public venues. This four-disc set showcases some of Chihuly's more recent work and also casts some light on the vision that drives his art. Themed respectively around installations in Chicago, London, and Jerusalem and Chihuly's collaboration with two Venetian glass masters, each disc clearly reflects the artist's creativity, vitality, and passion and reverence for glass. Shown are the many parts of the process of creating an installation, including design, glass forming, site preparation, and even inspiration. The narration is largely Chihuly's, allowing him in effect to tell the story of what he sees, what he does, and why he does it. Throughout, the glass continually awes. Some pieces vibrate with striking plays of color and light, while others gracefully evoke form and shape, with all installations seeming to grow organically from their environment. The often stunning visuals are enhanced by a sharp, high-quality image resolution. Highly recommended for academic and public libraries.-David Van de Streek, Pennsylvania State Univ.
