The study of the popular classes in Latin America is still in its earliest stages. Daily life and labor has been little examined, and even the history of organized labor and radical laboring class politics is understudied. For these reasons, Hahner's very general survey of Brazil's urban popular classes in the period 18701920 is to be welcomed. There are, however, some serious problems with the work. The author's emphasis is more political than social and economic, and the quantitative materials are not coherently integrated into the analysis. Hahner has difficulty defining who constitute the urban poor, and tends to homogenize the experience of quite distinct socioeconomic groups. There is no serious attempt to differentiate among Brazilian cities or between contrasting regional economies, all of which affect her generalizations about the role of the urban poor both in space and through time.
