A Look Inside
Full Text Reviews
Appeared in Choice on 1993-01:
An introduction to Shakespeare's history plays, this modest volume avers neither unifying thesis nor novelty of approach. Beginning with a useful chapter entitled "The History Play in the 1590's," it reviews all three parts of Henry VI in a subsequent chapter, then treats the seven remaining plays in chronological order by devoting a separate chapter to each. Pearlman's perspective, which is humanistic, leads him to focus mainly on characterization, theme, and dramatic form, but more documentation sometimes seems necessary, as when the author alludes to recent criticism and scholarship other than that included in the endnotes and "Selected Bibliography." The latter, by the way, could be lengthened and updated to advantage. Finally, an account of the way in which contemporary "new historicist" thinking either does or does not shed light on Shakespeare's representation of political, economic, and social issues in 15th- and 16th-century England could have given this work greater currency and distinction in a field already saturated with introductory materials. Even so, undergraduate students and general readers may profit from the discussion. W. C. Watterson; Bowdoin College
