"Job analysis" is a systematic way of gathering, analyzing, and documenting information about particular jobs. This volume expands the concept to "work analysis" by investigating the content of jobs in the context of larger systems and different job combinations. The editors, who are from universities and research institutions, have compiled this comprehensive collection of research studies reporting the latest developments in work analysis systems that have been applied in large companies, the military, aviation, and space flight settings. The studies describe and critique various approaches, such as cognitive task analysis, generalized work dimension analysis, personality-based job analysis, and functional job analysis. Some other major topics addressed include selling work analysis to organizations; developing questionnaires and interview questions; comparing job analysis systems abroad; understanding the Department of Labor's O*NET (CH, Jan'09, 46-2410) in writing job descriptions; and linking work analysis to compensation, training needs assessment, career planning, and other human resource management dimensions. A concluding chapter analyzes challenges and opportunities in work analysis such as the incorporation of automated task and motion tracking and applicability to small business.
