Gell-Mann, interviewed for the program, A world of ideas, approaches elementary particle physics from the point of view of a naturalist. In 1952, he discovered the quantity in theoretical physics known as "strangeness" and in 1969 was awarded the Nobel Prize for his work on quarks.
