Fieldhouse has written the first detailed study of the United Africa Company (UAC), the biggest commercial organization in west and equatorial Africa for most of the 20th century and a subsidiary of the great Anglo-Dutch Unilever combine since 1929. Though this is not an officially sponsored history, the author was given full access to the company's archives, so that issues such as the company's oligopolistic practices, its formation of "pools" for buying African produce, and other procedures much criticized by African nationalists are now well documented. The major contribution of the book, however, is the new dimensions it raises for the study of decolonization. The company was in many ways a more elaborate and complex organization than the Colonial Office itself. It, too, engaged in a series of developments from the 1950s that led to the transfer of activities into the hands of Africans, and ultimately broke its organization into "self-governing" local companies no longer controlled or owned from London. The United Africa Company, formed in 1929, was the largest single commercial organization in West and Equatorial Africa. This is a comprehensive account of its history, based on unrestricted access to confidential Comapany archives. Not a commissioned history, the book instead uses the UAC as a focal point for detailed study of how the role of foreign merchant capital changed in response to economic and political developments in the region during this crucial half century.
Long Description
The United Africa Company (UAC), formed in 1929 by the fusion of the Niger Company and the African and Eastern Corporation, was by far the largest single commercial organization in West and Equatorial Africa, and thus central to modern African economic history. This is the first detailed account to be published and one which fills a serious gap in the literature. It was not commissioned by the company (now reabsorbed into Unilever) but the author had full accessto all confidential material in the UAC and Unilever archives and complete freedom in what he wrote. The book is not intended to be primarily a company history but uses the UAC as a focal point for detailed study of how the role of foreign merchant capital changed in response to economic and politicaldevelopments in Black Africa during this critical half century.
