Appeared in Choice on 2009-05-01:
Oxford University Press produced two world atlases in 2008--the 15th edition of the Atlas of the World (13th ed., CH, Apr'07, 44-4225) and this comprehensive edition, which includes expanded coverage of the US, Canada, Mexico, the UK and Ireland, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand; more city maps; an expanded name index; and sections on world geography and statistics. It features a slightly larger format and slightly larger scale maps, and includes a free year of single-user access to Oxford Reference Online Premium (see CH, Sep'02, 40-0005), a searchable index of language and subject reference works published by Oxford. Both editions have a section of satellite images. The 15th edition features a gazetteer section with ready-reference information arranged alphabetically by country; the comprehensive edition omits this. The comprehensive version is comparable to The Times Comprehensive Atlas of the World, 12th edition (2008). Oxford's has 154 more pages of maps than the Times atlas, but the latter has 80,000 more index names. Oxford's volume uses bright colors and shading to depict elevation, and the Times atlas uses pastels. Oxford's has statistics for countries and cities, and the Times version has them for countries, states, and provinces. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-level undergraduates and above; general readers.
