Christened in 1580 with a name so common as to be almost anonymous, he set out on what he called 'brave adventures' to make a name for himself, becoming know as a soldier, a pirate, colonist and author. Little did he know that his name would forever be associated with that of a young Native American princess, Pocahontas. Smith was a remarkable man, in the great tradition of the Elizabethan adventurers: brave, resourceful, intelligent, with a vision of what America could become. His life reads like an adventure story, of battles, disasters, triumphs and of a refusal to give in. His armorial motto, 'Vincere est Vivere' translates as 'To Conquer is to Live'.
