This one-volume reference book is an offshoot of Peters and Woolley's outstanding online resource, The American Presidency Project (CH, Oct'06, 44-0690). Unlike the online project, this print resource focuses on a particular type of presidential communication, the annual State of the Union addresses. The 100 addresses included here were delivered by 16 presidents, beginning with Woodrow Wilson in 1913 (his was the first publicly delivered address to Congress since John Adams's) and concluding with George W. Bush in 2006. The speeches are arranged in chronological order, and each full-text speech is preceded by a brief, well-written essay by Kalb. These essays, which provide useful background information and context for readers, are not meant to be scholarly analyses. The volume includes three modern presidential speeches that functioned similarly to State of the Union addresses, along with three other presidential speeches that greatly influenced presidential rhetoric. Additional features include lists of members of Congress who gave televised opposition speeches, House gallery visitors present during each address since 1982, and every written State of the Union address submitted between 1790 and 1912. Summing Up: Recommended. All levels, particularly lower-/upper-level undergraduates and general readers. C. A. Collins Bucks County Community College
