Architecture started to move towards Modernism around 1900 with a wide-ranging reform movement involving architects, art critics, humanities scholars, philanthropic circles and not least universities and vocational building schools. They were all led by a profoundly felt sense of crisis that seemed to threaten all spheres of life, as well as art production. There no longer seemed to be a binding frame of reference, which meant that the need for establishing an identity came even more sharply to the fore. In this precarious situation, architecture acquired crucial significance in terms of designing the future, as it alone - so the widespread mood had it - was in a position to confront society's increasing tendency to universalize with the concept of a new symbolic unity. What was needed was a new style that conveyed this idea and reconnected architectural forms with vivid meaning, after the supposed failure of eclecticism. There was no controversy among contemporaries about the fact that this could only succeed with the aid of a new recourse to history. But how was this balancing act between the old and the new to be brought off? The hope of providing practical bases for design planning to which executed design could relate appropriately was linked with the definition of binding aesthetic categories. And so we see architects concerned with a critical examination of the traditional heritage, which had to be drawn upon for the building tasks that lay ahead, while meeting contemporary demands. Many design principles familiar from the debate about classical Modernism are already anticipated here. This phenomenon is not immediately perceptible, it is hidden by outward historicism. Buildings erected on this basis diverge considerably from each other in terms of their formal outward character. The much-heralded new style did not emerge recognizably as such. Instead, we can speak about a new iconography of building bearing a very personal stamp. The author pursues this in exemplary studies, interrogating the interplay between theory and practice, form and content, functionality and appropriateness. If these buildings have formerly been classified as examples of late historicism, it is now clear that they begin a new chapter of art history that has yet to be granted appropriate significance.
