This book is best compared to one by Stephen R. Adams, Information Sources in Patents (CH, Sep'06, 44-0027). The latter is directed at those interested in the various patent granting agencies, patent databases, and searching techniques. The book under review is directed more at those seeking to patent and those, usually patent professionals, who are required to search for information in the course of application or defense of a patent. A brief introduction to patent law and examination (primarily US) is followed by detailed discussion of types of patent searches--patentability, validity, infringement, clearance, state of the art, patent landscape--and searching mechanics. Chapters on patent analysis and reporting the search results follow. A concluding chapter treats searching tools. Since this book is directed toward a more specialized audience than the Adams book, it is not recommended for academic libraries in general. However, it is recommended for science and technology library collections emphasizing patents, law school libraries, other specialized libraries, and patent professionals. Summing Up: Recommended.
