This essential reference reflects new terminology and emerging issues in scientific publishing that have arisen since the ninth edition (1998). It offers some coverage of general style and grammar, but most of the work deals with concerns unique to the medical literature. Proper nomenclature for genetic, pharmaceutical, physiological, and other topics is presented in depth, as are abbreviations, units of measure, and statistical terms. Included are excellent chapters on study design and on proper usage of common terms. This guide addresses manuscript design and visual representation of data. A chapter on ethical and legal issues reviews timely topics such as disclosure of conflicts of interest, open access, editorial freedom, and copyright. Substantive background information introduces each section, providing key context for students, faculty, and professionals alike. Even for institutions with no health sciences programs, this manual is important because many of the journals in which life sciences faculty and students seek to publish use AMA format. An online version is in development; one may sign up for information under "Stay Informed" at . The manual's errata, excerpts, index, and more may be accessed at this Web site already. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-level undergraduates through professionals/practitioners. U. Ellis Deaconess Hospital
