Appeared in Library Journal on 2006-11-15:
Since 1960, this work has been a staple of the reference collection. Now in its 11th edition and edited by composer and music historian Bristow, who coedited several earlier editions, it includes the words and music for 198 anthems. When the words are not in Roman script, a transliteration is provided, along with a literal English translation (provided for all non-English lyrics). In some instances, the words are given separately from the music, since the coordination of words and music is uncertain. This edition includes the anthem of the new state of Timor-Leste, formerly East Timor, as well as replacement anthems for Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Iraq, Mozambique, Rwanda, and Somalia. This edition also includes words for six anthems that were not available in the tenth edition, plus alternate languages for several more anthems. Approximately 16 of the musical arrangements are new. While multiple verses are often provided, all verses are not always included. The book generally uses the melody/arrangement authorized by the country, but some melodies/arrangements are specially created for the book. Each entry is accompanied by a note briefly detailing the history of the anthem's adoption. Bottom Line This edition compares well to Xing Hang's Encyclopedia of National Anthems (Scarecrow, 2003), which does not include the anthems of Gibraltar, Isle of Man, Scotland, Serbia and Montenegro, Timor-Leste, Wales, and the European Union, all offered in Bristow's work. Xing Hang's work does, however, include the anthem of Palestine. The music in Bristow's book, printed on fine-quality paper, is well set up and easy to read. An essential reference resource for all libraries, including those that own previous editions.-Bruce R. Schueneman, Texas A&M Univ. Lib., Kingsville (c) Copyright 2010. Summaries
Main Description
This unique reference book (first published in 1960) has, over the years, proved invaluable, not only for the increasing number of occasions on which a particular national anthem is played, but also as a permanent reference book for those interested in music and contemporary culture. Close liaison with Embassies, High Commissions and governments has ensured that National Anthems of the World can claim to be the definitive international authority on the subject.
Long Description
A major revision of the essential guide to national anthems. With both the original and translated words plus music for 198 anthems, this invaluable guide includes countries from Armenia to Zimbabwe. All the latest changes are incorporated: the anthem of the new state of Timor-Leste, formerly East Timor, which became independent in 2002, and replacement anthems for Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Iraq, Mozambique, Rwanda, and Somalia. And where the country's language is not written in Roman script, the lyrics are transliterated phonetically.
Bowker Data Service Summary
This edition includes the National Anthems of 198 countries including Qatar, Swaziland, Belarus, Bosnia Hercegovina, Eritrea, Macedonia, and Palou. Each anthem is presented with the words in the original language and, where necessary, a transliterated version.
