One of the surprising facts disclosed in the preface to this book of facts is that it took Venning (an independent scholar) only 15 years to compile the information. One might guess the effort would have taken twice that time. One of the first sections of the compendium provides the names and dates of service for the sovereigns of all the kingdoms within the British mainland from before the Roman conquest to the modern day. Brief textual explanations follow some of the tables. In a paragraph devoted to the Viking rulers of York, the reader learns that in the tenth century the evicted king of Norway, Eric "Bloodaxe," was influential in changing the character of Cumbria from Danish to Norwegian. In addition to the chronological lists that make up most of the book, Venning provides tables with supplementary facts. The longest reigning sovereign was Victoria, 63 years, and the shortest Jane Grey, ten days. The central section of the book, over 300 pages, is given over to lists of those holding government ministries. Here one can find the names of the 87 men who held the office of home secretary from 1782 to 2004 and the 53 who served as colonial under-secretary from 1858 to 1963. In addition to political officers, Venning lists bishops and archbishops, military commanders, presidents of the Royal Society, lord chamberlains, and poets laureate. This unique source will be useful to anyone doing research on British history and literature and in myriad connected fields of study. ^BSumming Up: Recommended. All levels. D. C.
