This single-volume work by editor van Tilborg (Technische Universiteit Eindhoven) and contributors is one of several encyclopedias to appear in the last few years on the timely subject of security of information, computers, or networks. Topics include authentication, cryptographic protocols, digital certificates, key management, quantum cryptography, and secret sharing schemes. This book's goal is to assist students and computing professionals in understanding cryptography or security concepts without reading an entire book. The volume contains over 460 entries ranging in length from a few sentences to seven pages. Entries are signed by the authors, who are experts in the discipline. Most entries include bibliographies or URLs for additional readings or details. A key feature is the use of hypertext links within the text. Links are underlined and refer readers to the entry on that subject in the encyclopedia. A detailed subject index contributes to easy access. Although an online version would be more useful, this resource will be a valuable acquisition for institutions that emphasize cryptography or security in their courses or programs. Other institutions can rely on sources such as the Encyclopedia of Computer Science (4th ed., CH, Mar'01, 38-3650), which offers a considerable amount of information on the subject. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates and above. M. Knee State University of New York at Albany
