The prolific Muir writes on pop culture (film, television, science fiction) and is a contributor to the Web site Far Sector . Here he discusses movie musicals, following up his earlier book Musicals, coauthored with Michael Patrick Kennedy (CH, Feb'99, 36-3084), which considers their stage counterparts. After an introductory chapter on film musicals through the 1980s ("the golden age"), the author looks at the early 1990s and what he terms the "razzle-dazzle fizzles"--i.e., such forgotten films as Newsies and Swing Kids--before turning to the years from 1996 onward. This period, he says, marks the rebound of the genre, with such movie musicals as Moulin Rouge, Velvet Goldmine, and Chicago. He concentrates on 14 films, providing production credits for each in an appendix. A final chapter treats television musicals. His accounts are chatty and full of personal anecdotes and production details, all elaborately documented by a variety of pop sources. Including two sections of excellent color photos, this book will be a good source for recent film musicals (1990-2004), supplementing James Robert Parish and Michael Pitts's more comprehensive The Great Hollywood Musical Pictures (CH, Mar'93, 30-3588). ^BSumming Up: Recommended.
