In this basic primer on eating disorders, independent scholar Beals highlights the unique (and less recognized) dieting, body image, and performance issues of individuals involved in sports. Chapters cover prevalence, etiology, prevention, treatment, and post-treatment management of disordered eating. The author examines compelling topics such as the differing risks among individuals participating in endurance versus aesthetic sports, how eating disorders affect athletic performance, muscle dysmorphia, and how and when to confront athletes about eating problems. Three successful university eating disorder programs for athletes are described in detail, based on interviews with the developers. The tables increase the clarity of information clusters and research data, and photographs of a variety of athletic activities add realism and relevance. The appendix features standardized eating disorder screening questionnaires and health forms, a list of educational resources, and three case studies. This book will serve as a highly useful guide for coaches, trainers, administrators, students, and health professionals, including dietitians. Many will find it an important complement to standard sports nutrition books. Clear and sensitively written, it is an awareness-raising look at the special dietary and general health challenges facing today's athlete. ^BSumming Up: Recommended. All levels. J. M.
