Analyzing statistics can challenge any researcher, but one sees from the wealth of data in this work that compiling statistics is even more daunting. Divided into ten sections, it continues the format of previous editions, providing a wealth of statistical information on a variety of subjects including vital statistics, agriculture, trade, education, transportation, and communications. Most statistics have an end date of 1998, but a few (e.g., population) run to 2000. Each section begins with an introduction in which the editor provides informative background on particular statistical topics and describes the difficulties and discrepancies encountered in compiling statistics. Mitchell often warns about inconsistencies and provides a source list for further research. Tables have many footnotes and note the numerous complex boundary and currency changes. The editor culled most data from official European government publications. Inclusion of statistics of crime and of computer and Internet use would further strengthen this work. ^BSumming Up: Essential.
