Appeared in Choice on 2004-04-01:
The most obvious change from the third edition (CH, Apr'99) is the addition of seven more years of data, 1994-2000--and that is the only real difference. With a few minor exceptions, the current edition has the same 81 tables, arranged by country and presented under the headings "Population and Vital Statistics," "Labour Force," "Agriculture," "Industry," "External Trade," "Transport and Communications," "Finance," "Prices," "Education," and "National Accounts." The introductions, which are careful to explain problems with the availability and reliability of historical data, are virtually the same as those in the third edition, and the fourth edition repeats other introductory material, information sources, and country coverage. Nevertheless, like Mitchell's other historical statistics compendia, this is an invaluable resource for individual and comparative data. The price is not much higher than that of the previous edition, and many libraries serving historians will find it worthwhile to replace or update their holdings with the newer edition. ^BSumming Up: Highly recommended.
