A Look Inside
Reviews
Review Quotes
A distinguished and scholarly text, producing critical editions of 34 charters to the highest standards ... Dr Miller's linguistic skills are manifest throughout.
Miller has succeeded admirably in coming to grips with these complex texts, and the result is a contribution not only to our knowledge of Anglo-Saxon charters, but also to our understanding of the fortunes of a community whose fate was so closely linked to the royal politics of the period.
The commentaries on each chapter are lucid and detailed, highighting the varied interest of the texts edited ... Miller's edition bears witness to much knowledge and industry.
The exhaustiveness of Miller's researches is apparent in his thorough investigation of the (often lengthy) bounds attached to many of his charters, also in his search for literary and linguistic parallels for charter texts ... this is a substantial achievement and a significant addition to the growing corpus of Anglo-Saxon diplomas published in critical editions.
[this] edition and its accompanying research tools will provide an enormous stimulus to the study of the Anglo-Saxon world and serve as a monumental contribution to the study of the Early Middle Ages.

Summaries
Main Description
These 34 documents from the pre-Conquest archive of the New Minster reflect aspects of ecclesiastical and royal life in the 10th and 11th centuries. The Minster was perhaps founded to serve the spiritual needs of the royal household and the archive comprises a number of royal documents including the wills of King Alfred and King Eadred. Other charters include grants, diplomas, refoundation charters, bequests and other wills. Miller includes a brief introductory history of the Minster and its archives.
