Detailed and hefty, this work (compiled by two veteran Asian studies bibliographers) will serve as the definitive annotated bibliography of doctoral dissertations completed in the 20th century that deal primarily with or mention Hong Kong. It complements the Association for Asian Studies' defunct bibliographical journal Doctoral Dissertations on Asia (1975-1993) and Frank Shulman's bibliography Doctoral Dissertations on China and on Inner Asia, 1976-1990 (CH, Apr'99). It summarizes 2,395 dissertations accepted at 415 universities in 29 countries, four times the coverage for Hong Kong in Dissertation Abstracts International, with the US and UK most heavily represented after Hong Kong itself. Twenty-eight subject fields of the social sciences, law, health and medicine, science and technology, and fine arts are covered, with separate categories for martial arts, the overseas Hong Kong Chinese, and refugees in Hong Kong. It has indexes by author, institution, and subject. Three appendixes bring coverage up to 1999, review items received late, and list dissertations written in Chinese and Japanese. Most useful for libraries supporting specializations in East or Southeast Asian studies. R. B. M. Ridinger Northern Illinois University
