general note
Antiphonal book covering the 1st Sunday in Lent until the Vigil of the Ascension.
Formerly catalogued as Fisher MSS 09255.
Gothic liturgical script; with text and Gregorian chant notation.
Large maniculus (90 mm.) on leaf 117v.
Partially leather-covered, oak boards studded with metal fittings and brass bosses.
Title from: De Ricci and Wilson, v. 2, p. 2236, no. 9.
Twenty-one illuminations added to chant scores by a later hand, partly obscuring the texts. In general, the letter frames bear no apparent relationship to the words they precede. Several represent Florentine musicians of the fourteenth century including Francesco Landini, Andrea de' Servi, Lorenzo Masini, Ghiradellus de Florentia, Nicolaus Prepositi de Perugia, Vincenzo da Rimini and Antonio Zacara da Teramo. One illumination is copied from Gentile de Fabriano's "Adoration of the Magi; one copied from Fra Filippo Lippi's "Madonna in Adoration"; two probably copied from frescoes by Benozzo Gozzoli in the Riccardi Palace. Other initials similar to those found in the Squarcialupi Codex of the early 15th cent. Illuminations are executed in tempera and gold leaf.
Unidentified coat of arms of an early owner on recto of final leaf: or on a fess gules three crescents argent.
