This final volume of acta from Coventry covers the ecclesiastical careersof three very different bishops. Master Gerard Pucelle (1183-4) was one of theforemost early English canon law masters. Hugh de Nonant, a significant figurein the Longchamp dispute, was a 'curialis' par excellence, but is important herefor his attempt to destroy the monastic cathedral at Coventry and replace itwith seculars. Geoffrey Muschamp (1198-1208) was a protege of GeoffreyPlantagenet at York. Of some 143 documents in this volume, 57 have never beforebeen printed. Detailed appendices discuss various important sources of diocesanhistory.This volume of English Episcopal Acta complements Volumes 14 and 16, whichtogether cover the period 1072-1182.
