Appeared in Choice on 1997-01-01:
These two books are intended to update within their respective areas W.H. New's Critical Writings of Commonwealth Literature: A Selective Bibliography to 1970, with a List of Theses and Dissertations (CH, Dec'75). The larger body of publications involved justifies a separate volume on Australia, and also the several introductory essays by genre. Otherwise the two books follow the same general pattern: introductory essays followed by bibliographies for individual authors. One lack in the second volume is that the list of contents does not include the individual authors covered, which means a good deal of searching to find any one author. Users should be aware that the subject index is mostly concerned with the writers themselves, and the author index is for contributors of articles and books of criticism. The coverage appears to be satisfactory, except it would have been appropriate to give Kath Walker (Oodgeroo Noonucca) her own entry. The treatment of Southeast Asia is rather slim, the Pacific somewhat better. Together, these volumes provide excellent access to a growing body of literature from an increasingly important part of the world, and to critical writings about it. For libraries with a Pacific or Commonwealth interest, and for comparative literature collections. M. S. Martin emeritus, Tufts University
