Appeared in Choice on 1993-11:
This book is based on a survey of the human resource directors of 406 Conference Board companies. Editor Mirvis (coauthor of The Cynical Americans: Living and Working in an Age of Discontent and Disillusion, CH, Apr'90, and Managing the Merger, 1992) provides the opening chapter which describes the scope of the study as well as the concluding chapter which discusses managerial implications of the findings. The other six chapters are written by well-known researchers and consultants who address trends and issues in human resource management (human resource strategy, downsizing, education and training, workforce diversity, and health benefits). Each chapter describes one aspect of the study and is followed by a bibliography. The volume is very thorough and current. Recommended for advanced undergraduate through professional collections. J. A. Neal; University of New Haven
