Weatherford's almanac is a fascinating compendium of contemporary and historical information about women. It begins with a section of news, both international and US, a dual focus that continues through all the sections. Next comes a section on contemporary issues, where such topics as contraception and pay equity are discussed. Part 3 contains country-by-country and US statistics concerning women in such areas as education and employment. Brief biographical sketches of notable US and world women are followed by time lines of women's history. The most unusual section is a narrative of women's history for each state of the nation. Finally, a resource section includes a selected bibliography and lists of women-focused organizations and Web sites. The almanac concludes with a list of historical anniversaries, women in government, and an index. Although much of the information can be found elsewhere in academic libraries (e.g., in Chronology of Women Worldwide, ed. by Lynne Brakeman, CH, Jul'97; Naomi Neft and Ann D. Levine's Where Women Stand, CH, Dec'97; and Statistical Handbook on Women in America, ed. by Cynthia M. Taeuber, CH, Nov'96), this almanac is especially useful for personal and women's resource collections that can afford the stiff price. All levels. G. M. Herrmann; SUNY College at Cortland
