Appeared in Choice on 1989-04:
This volume will appeal to a wide range of needs and levels. It is all here--from the emancipation of the serfs in 1861 to the conclusion of the Civil War in 1921. The editor has wisely chosen to present biographical entries in a separate alphabetical sequence thus insuring a logical, roughly chronological flow to the main sequence, the welter of events, ideologies, movements, and patterns that cumulatively constitute the topic at hand. Both units share a common index while, in addition, the nonbiographical section boasts a thorough table of contents. This topical presentation is compartmentalized under a number of major headings, e.g., "Russian Society and Institutions," "The Revolutionary Movement," "The Road to Revolution," and "The Cultural Impact of the Revolution." Many of the 46 contributors are recognized authorities in their special areas of expertise. All in all, this encyclopedia is rare among reference works for it is fun to browse in or even to read from cover to cover yet it can simultaneously serve up specific bits and pieces of information as the user needs them. Illustrations are abundant; maps and tables are uniformly relevant. Strongly recommended for both public and academic libraries at all levels. -M. R. Yerburgh, Trinity College (VT)
