Defining "major leagues" broadly, Brucato provides information about hundreds of teams from 59 leagues in ten sports. Not only are the prominent sports (baseball, basketball, football, and hockey) covered, but also soccer, indoor soccer, arena football, team tennis, roller hockey, and lacrosse. Entries date from baseball's National Association (1871-75) through Women's Major League Roller Hockey (2000- ). Although coverage is limited to North American leagues (Canada and the US), a few Mexican and European teams that were members of North American leagues are included. The book has four sections: lists of teams by location, of leagues and their member teams, and of team names, and a section on the origins of team names. Although much of this information is available in similar works such as David Biesel's Can You Name That Team? (1991) and Mark Pollak's Sports Leagues and Teams: An Encyclopedia, 1871 through 1996 (CH, May'98), Brucato deals with some leagues and sports not readily found elsewhere. Recommended for libraries without comparable sources or needing broad coverage of sports history. R. Nash University of Nebraska at Omaha

Long Description
Major Leagues features an all-time register of major league teams in ten different sports: baseball, football, basketball, hockey, soccer, indoor soccer, arena football, tennis, roller hockey, and lacrosse. Beginning with 1871 and the National Association, the book covers 58 distinct major leagues, over 1000 franchises, and more than 1600 team names. In an easy-to-read format sure to please fans and scholars alike, it provides information on the years a team operated, the league or leagues in which it played, and any name changes or relocations it might have undergone. The book focuses on North American leagues, and lists major league teams from the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Because some North American leagues have incorporated occasional European teams or divisions, there are also a number of teams listed from England, Scotland, and the Soviet Union. The Negro Leagues and women's leagues of major league caliber are also included. The book is complete up to the summer of 2000.
