abstract
Looks at the problem of wealth in a democracy, where wealth underpins the system, but unequal distribution of wealth imperils the democratic process. Considers the fundamental contradiction: uncontrolled wealth promotes injustice, while controlled wealth limits freedom. Asks what the proper balance is. Looks at examples of the problem in India and in Britain, particularly under Margaret Thatcher's government. Looks at the system in East Germany for comparison. Looks at Jamaica where the country's own democracy is compromised by its poverty and consequent indebtedness to the International Monetary Fund and the rich counties who run it.
