Appeared in Choice on 2001-02-01:
Bass's dictionary is unique in providing brief biographical sketches of officials of both major parties (who may or may not be listed elsewhere) and concise definitions of the professional vocabulary of US politics. It begins with a list of acronyms and a brief chronology of dates significant in the history of US politics. It includes 14 appendixes--lists of presidents and vice presidents, speakers of the House, floor leaders of both houses, chairs of both major and minor national parties, and statistical summaries of both popular and electoral votes back to the 18th century. It concludes with a 30-page bibliography arranged by subject and by chronological period, of which the author distinguishes six. Easy to use and comprehensive, this dictionary is recommended as a compact source of information about US politics. D. W. Heron; emeritus, University of California

...the dictionary is most useful in defining technical terminology and characteristic idioms...Overall, this is an excellent resource that provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the history of the party system in the United States and is highly recommended.

Summaries
Bowker Data Service Summary
The Historical Dictionary of the United States Political Parties provides concise entries on the parties, major and minor, past and present, and those who ran them. Other entries explain the workings of the parties and familiar jargon.
Long Description
Provides concise entries on the parties, major and minor, past and present, and those who ran them. This includes all of the presidents and vice presidents, whomever won presidential votes in the electoral college, congressional party leaders, and national party chairs. Other entries explain the workings of the parties and familiar jargon. The dictionary is embedded in a broad study of the system in the introduction, a chronology placing events in their context, and a list of acronyms. Equally important is a well-structured bibliography covering the party system, the parties and their leadership.
