Appeared in Library Journal on 2007-10-01:
Childress's 1979 novel unfolds the life of Cora James from childhood to death as she moves from the still heavily segregated and racist South to the supposedly more liberal North. Her story, of course, is that of many who made the same 20th-century pilgrimage in hopes of finding a better life. This edition includes a new afterword by biographer La Vinia Delois Jennings.
