Appeared in Choice on 2000-02:
Defining "political participation" broadly, this encyclopedia examines the significance of 2,000 men and women during the 20th century. Presidents, prime ministers, and party leaders mix with spies, feminists, and actors, creating a colorful political palette. Geographic scope is also broad: although entries concentrate on the US and UK, several hundred countries are represented. Entry length varies from a few sentences to half a page, and 90 major figures are subjects of feature-length articles. Cross-references are included. Four hundred entries include bibliographies, but some entries are puzzling in this regard; e.g., George Marshall's entry has no suggested readings, but Bob Dylan's lists five books. Brief quotations by and about the subjects are sprinkled throughout. Other features are country-by-country and year-of-birth indexes and world leader tables. The book's unique slant nicely complements existing works, expanding the chronological coverage of The Columbia Dictionary of Political Biography (CH, Nov'91), and reaching beyond the focus on elected officials of A Dictionary of Political Biography, ed. by Dennis Kavanagh (1998). Together with Jay M. Shafritz et al.'s The Dictionary of 20th Century World Politics (CH, Jan'94), the Hutchinson encyclopedia provides a well-rounded picture of 100 years of political activity.
