Lentz provides a brief biography of each man who attained the rank of cardinal or pope during the past century. The biographies are bland and somewhat uneven in quality. The Encyclopedia of American Catholic History, ed. by Michael Glazier and Thomas J. Shelley (CH, Jul'98), provides more detailed information about American cardinals and gives more vivid pictures of them as individuals. The HarperCollins Encyclopedia of Catholicism, ed. by Richard P. McBrien (1995), gives more information regarding non-American churchmen and does not omit details of the controversies regarding prelates such as Yves Conger, the French theologian. Nevertheless, this volume is recommended for any collection needing biographies of all cardinals of this period. The book is well designed, and most Catholic terminology is defined in a glossary. Cardinals are listed by country in a handy appendix. All levels. K. E. Donohue Franciscan University of Steubenville
