In 1955, the Naval History Division of the US Navy Department published a small blue-covered United States Naval Chronology: World War II. Long out of print, it presented a cursory narrative of significant events with a highly selective list of ship losses; coverage for September 1, 1939, to December 7, 1941, was all but nonexistent. German historians J"urgen Rohwer and Gerhard H"ummelchen brought out a far more definitive, splendidly indexed English-language Chronology of the War at Sea, 1939-1945 (2v., CH, Oct'74; 2nd rev. ed., 1992). Cressman, a historian in the Contemporary History Branch of the Naval Historical Center (as the Naval History Division is now called), provides a revision of the 1955 work, using it as a skeleton on which to hang significant additional information. He pays special attention to the verification of incident locations and the activities of merchant shipping, and more competently handles accidents, collisions, and miscellaneous events. A brief bibliography and seven pages of text-amplifying notes are attached, but there are no indexes. US coverage is, naturally, enhanced over that in the German effort and, for that reason, Cressman is recommended even for collections holding the Rohwer/H"ummelchen second edition. M. J.
