Appeared in Choice on 1989-03:
This useful compilation of various statistics for both the UK and the Republic of Ireland begins with the first reliable series of records in the Middle Ages and ends with 1980. It is divided into 16 chapters based on the topical divisions used by current national statistical yearbooks, e.g., population, fuel and energy, external trade, public finances, and national accounts. Each chapter consists of a list of the individual tables followed with a detailed introduction that explains the uses and the limitations of the information presented in that chapter. Next come the individual tables, which number from around 15 to more than 30 for each individual chapter. Each table is well documented and is based on the latest research. Whenever possible, the information in the tables is presented "raw" rather than in a manipulated form. An index allows the reader easily to find tables on specific subjects. Naturally, the bulk of the information presented in this work comes from the 19th and 20th centuries when increased economic activity and record keeping have generated more statistical data. Still, statistics from the late 17th and the 18th centuries--and even the 16th century--frequently appear, making this a work worth consulting by specialists in the early modern period. This excellent work updates and supersedes Phyllis Deane and B.R. Mitchell, Abstract of British Historical Statistics (1962) and B.R. Mitchell and H.G. Jones, Second Abstract of British Historical Statistics (1971). -R. Fritze, Lamar University
