abstract
Series explores English as the international medium of communication from its obscure beginnings in the Anglo-Saxon and Norman conquests, its flowering under the influence of Shakespeare and the King James Bible, the influence of the Scots and the Irish, and the effects on it of immigration to the New World by Africans, French, Spanish. The series also looks at new and evolving forms of the language in Jamaica, India and other areas of the world.
