As the subtitle states, this is both a catalog and a collection of works by Blake and it is a superb piece of scholarship on the little-known illustrations of the great 19th-century English artist. The book is divided into two basic parts. The text portion includes an introduction, catalog, two appendixes, and an index. Almost 300 images, reproduced on high-quality coated paper, make up the second half. Essick's introduction provides an accurate, historical perspective on the early period of Blake's creative life and a unique insight into the style, methods, and processes of 19th-century book illustration. The catalog is a commentary on the individual illustrations, providing the reader with a thorough, descriptive narrative on the background of the individual images as well as important bibliographical and technical information. The appendixes document Blake's early apprenticeship and present works which Essick suggests are "unsubstantiated attribution" to Blake. More than 150 pages of illustrations showcase the great diversity of his genius and are generously displayed and beautifully printed. As a historical and visual document, Essick's book is a necessary reference for college libraries and for collectors of popular 19th-century illustration.-D. Ichiyama, Purdue University
