Appeared in Choice on 1998-02:
In this expanded and more comprehensive second edition (1st ed., 1983) of Herman's practical and useful how-to guide for locating US government publications, each chapter begins with questions for readers to think about and ends with several exercises. The book is packed with reproductions of indexes, examples of searches, and illustrative charts that are extremely helpful to novice researchers. Although the book concentrates on current material, there is also a helpful section about locating historical publications. Herman illustrates thoroughly how to use some CD-ROMs and major electronic databases available from the government and from private sources. Much of the information on electronic resources is found in the separate "Internet Supplement," which, according to the introduction, will be updated periodically. The one area slighted is the Supreme Court; the only discussion of judicial sources is in the supplement. Although this book seems directed at persons working or preparing to work in federal depository libraries, it would also be helpful to students, faculty, and administrators who need to find government information on their own.
