Alan Turing was a brilliant mathematician and cryptoanalyst who wrote "Computing Machinery and Intelligence", which proposed a test to decide what constitutes a thinking machine, the Turing Test. In 1952 he was arrested and convicted of gross indecency by the British courts, for homosexual activities. In 1954, he committed suicide.
