A Look Inside
Full Text Reviews
Appeared in Choice on 1992-09:
Of necessity, any biography of Robert Pike must rely as much on his times as on his life, and the biographer must rely on such records as survive. The temptation to conjecture is unavoidable. Pike was an important local 17th-century political and military figure whose center of operations was Salisbury, Massachusetts. He fought Indians, supported the dissident Quakers, spoke out against the witchcraft trials, and served in the colony's legislature as deputy and assistant while remaining a staunch Puritan. Warren's book is marred by excessive long quotations, too often from old secondary accounts. Much of the documentation is based on outdated research. For example, of the 95 items in the bibliography, some of which are general encyclopedia and similar material, only 17 were published after 1950 and some of them are of peripheral value. Useful to local historians and to some advanced research institutions. C. R. Allen Jr.; emeritus, Widener University
