Appeared in Choice on 1993-02:
Yarrow has compiled ten essays that discuss recent theater in France, West Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Poland, and Britain. There is very valuable material here, but the book really does not fulfill the expectations created by its title or by the claim on the jacket that it will be "an indispensable reference book for all students of modern European theatre." As Yarrow indicates in the introduction, "There is an imbalance in the length of sections and chapters. This arises from the vagaries of putting together a collection of essays by different authors in several countries." One wonders why it was impossible to overcome the imbalance to some degree, and why so many countries are omitted. In the more developed sections there is a good overview of theater and society, and such major directors as Peter Palitzsch, Peter Stein, and Tadeusz Kantor are discussed in relationship to the political, economic, and social factors that formed the background for their work. In some sections the material is disappointingly thin. In this discussion of thirty years of theater, the British directors, for example, are discussed in one page! The book provides some useful information, but as a whole is disappointing. One might have expected to find some photographs to accompany the text. Advanced undergraduate; graduate; faculty. Y.
