The subtitle conveys this work's content more clearly to American readers than does the title proper. Edited by a well-known British social scientist, the directory reflects in many ways the unsettled situation in Russia: the ambiguity of the official name of the country, the many geographic name changes, and the lack of clear-cut party affiliations among deputies in the Supreme Soviet. Recent political upheavals are reflected in the fact that only a few names listed here appeared in Alexander Rahr's Biographical Directory of 100 Leading Soviet Officials (CH, Sep'91) or in Tauris Soviet Directory, comp. by Romolo Cichero (CH, Nov'90). Clearly, the majority of present Russian legislators are new to their jobs. The introduction provides data on the present people's deputies, information about the 1990 elections, activities of the Supreme Soviet since then, and lists of "groups" and "factions" within the Supreme Soviet. The largest section consists of biographies of the deputies including addresses, phone numbers, committee assignments, election data, and voting behavior. The information may be based on reliable sources, but none are indicated. Overall, a valuable source for readers at any level. L. Siegelbaum; Michigan State University
