Appeared in Choice on 1993-10:
Murphy was one of America's first medical celebrities. As a young surgeon, he achieved fame for his heroic efforts on behalf of police injured in the notorious Haymarket Riot of 1886. His celebrity was such that when Theodore Roosevelt was shot by a would-be assassin in 1912, the former president traveled from Milwaukee, where the shooting occurred, to Chicago to be treated by Murphy. Although many decried his love of publicity, Murphy was an extraordinary surgeon. Several of the techniques he developed are still used, and he is credited with being the pioneer advocate of early removal of the diseased appendix. This volume, while it provides some general biographical information, concentrates on his professional life. His range of medical interests was wide; the individual essays "Gynecology," "Neurosurgery," "Orthopedics," and "Thoracic Surgery" merely suggest his sphere of practice. Incorporated into the book is a complete bibliography of Murphy's writings as well as a selection of references made to him in the medical literature. A well-composed technical volume that should be in every medical history collection. Professional. I. Richman; Pennsylvania State University, Harrisburg
