Intending this work for a nonspecialist audience--university students, instructors, acquisitions librarians--the compiler has chosen to call it a "check-list" rather than a bibliography, emphasizing that it is not comprehensive, critical, or annotated. Nonetheless it performs a unique and valuable function by providing easy access to English-language primary and secondary sources in modern Greek literature. It covers translations and criticism of Greek literature from the 11th century to the present. The publications, dated from 1824 to 1987, are divided into seven categories: bibliographies, journals normally treating modern Greek literature, special issues dedicated by other journals to modern Greek literature, anthologies, books of collected essays, general literary history, and works by and about individual literary authors. There is an index of authors, critics, editors, and translators. In addition to being an invaluable resource for English-speaking students of modern Greek literature, this "check-list" provides an outline of the current state of English translations in this area, and thus should be useful for prospective translators in identifying untranslated works, authors, etc. Recommended for any public or academic library serving readers interested in the literature of modern Greece. -J. R. Luttrell, Princeton University
