Appeared in Choice on 1999-02:
Among the more notable collections of Civil War soldiers' letters is this volume of the letters of Captain Ujanirtus Allen, 21st Georgia Infantry, composed for his wife Susie. Allen, who served both in the Shenandoah Valley and with the Army of Northern Virginia, mixed news from the front with instructions to whip disobedient slaves at home. Unable to prevent himself from offering sometimes harsh characterizations of his men and fellow officers, he remained confident of victory, only to die of wounds at Chancellorsville. An epilogue contains letters describing the captain's passing and revealing something of his reputation. The result offers a rich store of information about one man in his many roles as an officer, patriot, husband, father, and slave owner. Wisely keeping annotation to a minimum, the editors provide a roster of the men of Allen's company that sheds light on the soldiers' economic and family status. Upper-division undergraduates and above. B. D. Simpson; Arizona State University
