abstract
Tells the story of the Mowachaht people, one of the great whaling societies of the north Pacific: how in 1903 a unique and magnificent Whaler's shrine, of great cultural importance to the Mowachaht for thousands of years, was shipped from Friendly cove, on the far northwest coast of Canada to the Museum of Natural History in New York ; how in the 1960's and 70's, when only one family remained, they were moved to the territory of a neighbouring tribe, the Muchalaht, at a site under the walls of a pulp mill, where they suffered extremes of pollution, violence and alcohol ; how then, in the 1990's to overcome their grief, the Mowachaht and their neighbours the Muchalaht, began to revive their culture and rediscover their pride, and revisited their shrine
