Designed for Anglophones, this annotated bibliography of more than 800 books and articles covers all areas concerning Hong Kong through 1990. The majority of items cited (75) are works of recent publication (1980s). Scott aims at providing a select but broad-based guide for the general reader as well as for the specialist. The bibliography has an excellent introduction which chronicles the history of Hong Kong and the fast-approaching predicament of the return of this British colony to Chinese sovereignty in 1997. Following the introductory essay, the book is divided into 30 broad subject sections including coverage of geography, history, population, religion, politics, economy, education, etc. Within each subject section title sequence is random--one of the weaknesses of the volume. Annotations are generally brief and descriptive. Cross-references are provided at the end of each subject section. There are three separate indexes: author, title, and subject. The currentness and availability of the publications seem to override some of the omissions in the book. Suitable for upper-division undergraduate students, graduate students, and the general public. -K. T. Wei, University of Illinois at Urbana--Champaign
