Zenzen's work is a detailed narrative of the efforts to preserve a battlefield site just 30 miles southwest of Washington, DC, where two major Civil War encounters took place in 1861 and 1862. The book's foreword, by Edwin C. Bearss, historian emeritus of the National Park Service, deftly summarizes the nine military and political "battles" that occurred over a span of 130 years. The integrity of the landscape became an issue after WW II with the hegemony of the automobile and population pressures. Zenzen traces the history of the site from the first efforts at commemoration, just weeks after first Manassas, through its acquisition by the National Park Service in 1940, to the more recent conflicts with developers. Battling for Manassas depicts the 1973 confrontation with the Marriott Corporation, the 1988 proposal for William Center Mall, and recently the famous 1993-94 battle with the Disney Corporation. Although this book is very competent administrative history, it does not examine the deeper motives for battlefield preservation. Complements Diane Barthel's Historic Preservation (CH, Apr'97) and Edward Tabor Linenthal's Sacred Ground (1991). All levels. S. L. Recken; University of Arkansas at Little Rock
