Appeared in Choice on 1996-07-01:
Superbly typeset and bound, this bibliography is an important addition to essential reference works for the study of English literature, history, religion and culture, and Colonial America, continuing into the 18th century T.H. Clancy's English Catholic Books, 1641-1700: A Bibliography (1974; rev. ed., 1996) and A.F. Allison and D.M. Roger's The Contemporary Printed Literature of the English Counter Reformation (2v., 1989-94). An informative background section contains information on 18th-century Catholic publishers, devotional works, Catholic publishing activities, and emancipation and emigration. The clear "Definition, Scope and Form of Items" section indicates that this bibliography presents "about 1000 new items" not in the Eighteenth Century Short title Catalogue (ESTC). Valuable supplementary lists include "References and Abbreviations" and a "Key to Library Symbols." The 2,960 numbered entries give author, title, number of volumes, place and year of publication, format, pagination, printer, publisher, bookseller, ESTC number, library location, and a general note (e.g., "information on the author, editor, or translator"). Three indexes--titles; printers, publishers, and booksellers; proper names in titles and notes--complete an important and indispensable bibliographical tool. General and academic collections. W. Long Description
In the early part of the 18th century, Roman Catholic book production still had a clandestine character with books regularly published anonymously and with incomplete or false imprints. This book examines the problems this creates for bibliographers, giving a complete overview of Roman Catholic book production in the period. A bibliography of over 3000 titles is complemented by notes concerning authorship, translators and information as to the bibliographical or historical context of items. Additional indexes of titles, authors, editors and translators make this an essential research tool.English Catholic Books fills a vital gap in the bibliographic record of Roman Catholic books. It is the successor to Thomas Clancy's English Catholic Books 1641-1700 and The Contemporary Printed Literature of the English Counter-Reformation 1558-1640 by Allison & Rogers also published by Scolar Press (1994)
