A Look Inside
Full Text Reviews
Appeared in Choice on 1988-02:
Consisting of papers from a conference on Eisenhower as President at Hofstra University in 1984, this collection is uneven. Its contents range from the trivial (on election campaigns and the ``balance of terror'') to valuable (on desegregation, antitrust, most other domestic matters, decision process, and most foreign policy issues). Two papers on Latin American issues are notably weak in evidence, but most writers used Eisenhower's papers and other sources to good effect. Most papers are also well written and their notes quite useful (excluding the Latin American papers). The editing is superb, with few visible errors; the index is incomplete. The 47 pages of puffery about the conference and Hofstra might well have been omitted to make room for the papers of Stephen Ambrose, Edgar Faure, Andrew Goodpaster, Kenneth W. Thompson, D.C. Watt, and others of their standing. Upper-division undergraduates and above.-R.W. Sellen, Georgia State University
